Freese and Nichols: Upper Brushy Creek Dam 7 Modernization Project for the Upper Brushy Creek Water Control & Improvement District

This 50-year-old flood control dam near Austin was reclassified by the state to “high hazard” due to substantial development downstream. Upper Brushy Creek WCID undertook a comprehensive upgrade of the dam to meet current safety requirements and provide increased flood protection to downstream residents. Freese and Nichols designed modifications to the dam and utilized a unique labyrinth weir due to its ability to maximize spillway discharge within a limited footprint. The site-specific spillway design required extensive hydraulic modeling. The design also included upgrades to the beloved hike-and-bike trail across the dam which offers a scenic recreational amenity for the community.
